In searching for payable lodes, whether of gold, silver, copper, or even tin in some forms of occurrence, the indications are often very similar. The first prospecting is usually done on the hilltops or ridges, because, owing to denudation by ice or water which have bared the bedrock, the outcrops are there more exposed, and thence the lodes are followed down through the alluvial covered ...
Quartz reef mining played an important role in 19th century gold-mining districts such as Bendigo, Victoria, Central Otago in New Zealand, and the California mother lode. In at least the shallow, oxidized zones of quartz reef deposits, the gold occurs in its metallic state, and is easily recovered with simple equipment. A "reef" is another term for a vein of some mineral or ore, and has nothing to do with biological reefs (bioherms), such as coral reefs. Quartz is one of the most common minerals in the earth's crust, and mo…
Reef prospecting entails locating gold bearing quartz veins. The majority of the accessible reefs have most likely been found by early prospectors and explorations; as a result, remote and poorly outcropping reefs are more probable to be found. These days, in the short term, this form of prospecting is not as rewarding as metal noticing.
